Neighborhood Plans are created by participating neighborhood residents and Orem City planning staff. They are developed in harmony with all other plans adopted by the City. The plans communicate the values and interests of neighborhood residents and serve as guidelines for future growth, development, and preservation. Furthermore, they encourage the creation of aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods and public spaces that enhance the community. They also address the needs, concerns, and potential impacts of land use, transportation, economic development, and preservation of neighborhoods.
Participating early helps cities plan with people instead of “surprising” citizens with plans they may not like. There will always be some discomfort and disagreement, but if we as neighbors can have early discussions with each other and city staff many outright conflicts can be avoided. You can find the drafts of the Orem/Sharon/Hillcrest and Stonewood/Lakeridge plans on Orem City’s website at https://orem.org/planning/ under the “Current Planning (Public Hearing Notices)” section in “Recent Notices.” This tab will take you to a DropBox folder with the neighborhood plans. The other day, a great opinion piece was posted on Bicycle Times magazine. The main concept of it was that cars rarely give back as much as we put into them. But a bicycle, that's totally different.
I liked this paragraph the most: "Bikes do nothing but give back. They open your eyes to the world around you. New people, places and experiences by bike are without a doubt some of the best connections you can make. The simplest things can become so fascinating with a bike as an integral part of your life." You can read the full article here: http://bicycletimesmag.com/opinion-invest-in-your-community-ride-your-bike-share-your-car/ Last fall, the Coalition hosted a small Mobile Active Transportation Tour (MATT). The purpose of a MATT is to help get city officials and other interested parties out on the road to see the conditions and get an idea for the bike-ability and walk-ability of the city. We were lucky to take a ride with Orem City's Long Range Planner Christian. Christian is already a big bicycle advocate, but we enjoyed the ride and a good lunch at Which Witch.
Mad Dog Cycles hosted the support truck and helped keep our bicycles safe while we ate. Overall it was a great ride, and we want to plan another one soon to hopefully get more people on a tour. |
